Making sense of the role addiction has played and what may sit beneath it
Addiction can often be a way of coping with difficult emotions or experiences. In our work together, we explore what may be driving these patterns, while supporting you to develop safer, more sustainable ways of managing and moving forward.
I bring my own lived experience of addiction and recovery into the work, which means I can meet these difficulties with a level of understanding that comes not just from training, but from having lived through them.
My approach to working with addiction often involves:
-
Understanding addiction as a way of coping with overwhelming feelings, rather than simply a behaviour to stop.
-
Exploring what may sit underneath addiction, including experiences of disconnection, pain, or inner conflict.
-
Working with the sense of conflict that can exist between wanting change and relying on the behaviour to cope.
-
Recognising the role addiction has played, while gradually finding safer, more sustainable ways of managing.
-
Moving towards change through understanding the person, not just the addiction.
