Understanding what self-destructive behaviours are helping you to manage
Self-Destructive behaviours can serve an important function, even when it feels distressing or confusing. I offer a supportive space to explore what sits beneath these behaviours and to develop alternative ways of coping that feel safer and more manageable.
My approach to this work often involves:
-
Understanding self-harm as a way of coping with overwhelming feelings, rather than something to be judged or eliminated.
-
Exploring what self-harm or self-injury may be expressing, including distress that feels hard to hold or put into words.
-
Working with the role self-harm plays, including regulation, relief, or a sense of control when other options feel unavailable.
-
Creating space to reduce shame and begin to speak more openly about what has been held privately.
-
Gradually finding alternative ways of responding to distress that feel possible and manageable over time.
